  6. for top musicians; of lung cancer; in New York City. A veteran
  7. of the Fletcher Henderson and Billy Eckstine big bands, Blakey
  8. worked with Dizzy Gillespie and Charlie Parker, and founded the
  9. Messengers in the 1940s. Pianist Keith Jarrett, saxophonist
  10. Jackie McLean and trumpeters Freddie Hubbard and Wynton
  11. Marsalis were a few of the artists he nurtured into stardom.
